Red Light Therapy & Thyroid Health: Can Light Help Support Your Thyroid Naturally?
Discover what science is revealing about red light therapy, inflammation, and thyroid function. Your thyroid may be small, but it has a BIG job! This butterfly-shaped gland sits at the front of your neck and helps control your metabolism, energy, body temperature, and many other important functions.
When your thyroid isn't working properly, you may experience:
Constant fatigue and low energy
Unexplained weight gain
Brain fog and trouble concentrating
Hair thinning or hair loss
Feeling cold all the time
Mood changes and poor sleep
Millions of people struggle with thyroid problems, including hypothyroidism and Hashimoto's thyroiditis. But what if something as simple as light could help support thyroid health? Researchers are studying that very question, and some of the findings are encouraging!
How Does Red Light Therapy Work?
Red light therapy, also called photobiomodulation (PBM), uses specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light to support healthy cellular activity. Inside your cells are tiny energy-producing structures called mitochondria. Think of mitochondria as your body's little power plants. Certain wavelengths of light can interact with these structures and influence how cells produce energy, manage inflammation, and respond to stress.
This matters because inflammation and cellular stress can affect how well your thyroid works.

What Does Research Say About Red Light and Thyroid Health?
Scientists have been studying red and near-infrared light in people with Hashimoto's thyroiditis, an autoimmune condition in which the immune system attacks the thyroid gland. Several human studies have reported promising results.
Study #1: Improved Thyroid Function
A randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial involving 43 patients with autoimmune thyroid disease examined the effects of near-infrared laser therapy.
Researchers found that participants receiving light therapy needed significantly less thyroid hormone medication, on average, than those receiving placebo treatment.
They also found improvements in certain markers of thyroid inflammation.
Study #2: Reduced Thyroid Antibodies
A study involving 350 patients with Hashimoto's compared light therapy combined with nutritional supplements against supplements alone. The light therapy group showed improvements in T3 levels, thyroid hormone balance, and thyroid peroxidase antibodies (TPO antibodies). These antibodies are often elevated in people with Hashimoto's.
Study #3: Less Cellular Stress and Better Quality of Life
A 2024 randomized clinical trial involving 46 patients found that light therapy improved certain markers of oxidative stress and quality of life. Oxidative stress occurs when harmful molecules overwhelm the body's natural defenses. Although this study did not find significant improvements in thyroid hormone levels, its results suggest that light therapy may offer benefits beyond hormone production.
Why Wavelengths and Proper Dosing Matter
Not all red light therapy equipment is created equal! The wavelength of light, treatment time, energy delivered, and whether the light is continuous or pulsed can all affect how the body responds. Researchers studying thyroid health have commonly used near-infrared wavelengths around 820–830 nanometers. At Optimal Health & Vitality, our clinically powered full-body red light therapy MEDBED features multiple red and near-infrared wavelengths, along with adjustable pulse settings. This advanced technology allows us to customize treatment settings rather than rely on a single fixed light output. Why is this important? Because more light isn't always better. The goal is to provide an appropriate amount of light to support healthy cellular activity.
A Whole-Body Approach to Thyroid Wellness
Your thyroid doesn't work alone. Healthy thyroid function is connected to nutrition, sleep, stress, hormone balance, and overall metabolic health. At Optimal Health & Vitality, we believe in supporting the body as a complete system. Red light therapy may be one valuable part of a broader wellness plan designed to support:
Healthy cellular energy production
A balanced inflammatory response
Exercise recovery and tissue health
Overall wellness and vitality
The Bottom Line
Research into red light therapy and thyroid health is still growing, but the early findings are exciting. For people interested in supporting their thyroid and overall cellular health, photobiomodulation offers an interesting, noninvasive area of research.
Red light therapy is not a proven replacement for thyroid medication, and thyroid hormone levels should continue to be monitored. Interested in learning more about our advanced clinical-grade red light therapy?
